ABSTRACT

@#A coal mining industry typically applies a 24-hours working time, which enforces some workers to stay conscious during night shift, opposing human body's biological clock. This study aims to analyse the level of fatigue experienced by high dump truck operators (HD operators) in a coal mining site in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. This study utilizes primary data which obtained from distributing Industrial Fatigue Research Committee (IFRC) survey to all HD operators and secondary data (for Fatigue Likelihood Scoring -FLS) which consists of HD operators’ working schedule that currently applied in the company. Results obtained is analyzed using Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) framework which combines FLS classification and Dawson-McCulloch’s model of fatigue risk trajectory. This study reveals that based on IFRC survey, HD operators experienced low/mild fatigue due to insignificant influence of fatigue-related factors contained in the survey. However, consideration for improvement is in need since the resultof fatigue for night shift operators is close to moderate level. In addition, based on FLS, the level of fatigue indicates that HD operators experienced excessive working hours, in which in FRMS graph classified as fatigue-related errors. Thus, this studyproposes several strategies as the hazard control mechanism: (1) providing optimum resting time, (2) equipping operators with audio music that lead to positive energy and increasing work focus, and (3) adding afternoon shift to balance the working hours.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Coal worker's pneumoconiosis is caused by the inhalation of coal dust and its accumulation in the lungs after several years of exposure. Objective: To determine the prevalence of pneumoconiosis in underground mining workers exposed to coal dust in Cundinamarca, Colombia, and its association with their spirometry results and respiratory symptoms. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional study conducted on 215 workers who were administered a questionnaire on respiratory symptoms. For each worker a chest radiograph was taken according to the criteria of the International Labor Organization. Information on the workers' socio-demographic characteristics, smoking habits, and spirometry results was included. Results: The average age was 45.5 ± 9.4 years and the average length of employment was 21.7±10.0 years. Expectoration was the symptom most frequently reported (73.5%). Regarding spirometry results, a normal pattern was observed in 89.8% of the sample, while obstructive and restrictive patterns were found in 5.1% and 3.7% of the subjects, and 0.5% had a peripheral airways dysfunction pattern. The prevalence of pneumoconiosis was 42.33%. FEV1/FVC ratio (81.75 vs. 83.74, p=0.045) and FF25-75% (84.96 vs. 91.95, p<0.001) mean values were significantly lower in workers with pneumoconiosis. Conclusion: Pneumoconiosis was highly prevalent in the study population and its diagnosis was associated with spirometry results (FEV1/FVC and FEF25.75%); bearing in mind that currently there are not effective treatments for this disease, it is necessary to implement control and prevention strategies aimed at reducing occupational exposure to coal dust and, this way, prevent its occurrence.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Coal workers' pneumoconiosis is a chronic and irreversible disease representing a public health problem. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of pneumoconiosis and its associated factors among underground coal miners in the Colombian departments of Boyacá, Cundinamarca and Norte de Santander. Materials and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 476 miners to measure the prevalence of pneumoconiosis and its associated factors such as coal dust and silica levels, as well as the occupational conditions. The medical assessment and a chest x-ray were performed according to the International Labor Organization criteria, along with spirometry and the identification of glutathione S-transferase and repair enzyme polymorphisms. The associations were explored using Cox regression models. Results: We performed a total of 479 environmental monitoring sessions in 31 companies and we evaluated 476 workers with 10 to 57 years of mining work experience. The prevalence of pneumoconiosis was 33.8% (95% CI: 27.0 - 41.3%). In the Cox multivariate regression model with a constant risk time, pneumoconiosis was significantly associated with working in medium-sized companies (PR=2.00, 95% CI: 0.995 - 2.690; p=0.052), the level of severe exposure to coal dust (PR=2.055, 95% CI: 1.043 - 4.048; p=0.038), and working in underground mining for 25 years or more (for those with 25.0-29.9 years: PR=2.199, 95% CI: 1.449 - 3.338; p=0.001). Conclusions: The prevalence of pneumoconiosis was very high and was found to be associated with severe exposure to coal dust, work exposure for 25 years or more and working in medium-sized enterprises.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Open coal mining will cause a series of modifications to different lotic environments in Colombia. In this paper we analyzed the case of an open pit coal mine located in the Department of La Guajira, Colombia, focusing on the state of knowledge of the ichthyofauna, the potential effects of modifications on aquatic communities and the effectiveness of restoration/compensation measures. To assess the state of knowledge ofthe ichthyofauna, we reviewed relevant literature and used the ICE species richness estimator. To identify the potential effects of the modifications on aquatic biota and the effectiveness of the restoration/compensation measures, we carried out a literature review. We found that about 42 % of the fish species in the Ranchería river basin and the mining concession area are still unknown. Furthermore, related studies indicate that the modifications will negatively affect the physical characteristics of the channels and consequently, the structure and function of the aquatic biota. Although we advise the non-intervention of the lotic systems, we propose some recommendations under an intervention scenario, such as conducting research addressing different facets of biodiversity, publication of results in refereed journals, public access to data, among others. We concluded if the economic benefit derived from coal mining prevails over the aquatic environments preservation there will be a loss of functions and ecological services that are indispensable for the human well-being and the ecosystem balance.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To study the correlation between low back pain (LBP) and occupational stress in coal miners.@*Methods@#From January 2015 to December 2016, a total of 472 front-line workers in a mining area of a large-scale coal mining enterprise in Shanxi, China were enrolled in the study. The general information, condition of LBP, and occupational stress level of the subjects were obtained by questionnaire survey. Dichotomous logistic regression (DLR) was used to analyze the correlation between LBP and occupational stress.@*Results@#Of the 472 subjects, 186 subjects experienced LBP in the past year; the prevalence rate of LBP was 39.41%. The scores of the Occupational Role Questionnaire were significantly higher for workers in the LBP group than in the non-LBP group (P<0.01) . As revealed by the DLR analysis, age, marital status, length of service, occupational stress role, labor intensity, keeping single posture during work, and working in shifts were risk factors of LBP (P<0.01) , while smoking may be a protective factor against LBP (P<0.01) .@*Conclusion@#Occupational stress role is a potential risk factor for LBP in coal miners (P<0.01) . Reasonable work assignment and timely alleviation of occupational stress may be one of the effective approaches to prevent LBP.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective To compare the life quality perception and environmental situation, in nearby and distant towns from the mining industry of the Boyacá Department of Colombia Method Cross-sectional study. The towns near of influence area were grouped into zones 1 and 2, and distant towns as zone 0. Conglomerates carried out a simple, multistage, random sampling. A sample of 1,117 households was determined and the unit of analysis was the family. To measure the quality of life and health perception, the WHOQOL-BREF instrument was used. Frequency distributions and comparisons between qualitative and quantitative variables were calculated. Univariate and bivariate analyzes were performed. Results The life quality perception and satisfaction with health was greater in zone 0. The means calculated for the four domains of the questionnaire, by towns, shows that Ramiriquí has the highest interquartile ranges. The life quality perception decreases in women and with increasing age. In zones 1 & 2, the environment was described as "very bad" and without any improvement at the last five years. Conclusion Communities close to mining-industrial activities report a worse perception of health, greater concern about the risk of exposure and do not consider that mining industry provides greater benefits for their quality of life.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract The Acid mine drainage (AMD) are discharges characterized by low pH and high concentrations of sulfate and metals. AMD is considered as a serious problem of the mining industry and preventing its formation is the best environmental and economical option. Mushroom compost was evaluated as organic carbon amendment to promote sulfate reduction and metal sulfide precipitation during AMD formation. Three PVC cells (2.4 L) were filled with 300 g of the mixture of mushroom compost and coal mining waste in different proportions (40:60, 25:70, 60:40 %) and 400 mL of water (18,5 Ω). The chemical change in the leachates and the microbial activity in the mixtures were evaluated for 6 weeks. In leachates, dissolved oxygen (< 2,0 mg L-1) and redox potential (< (100 mV) decreased while pH (> 6,5) and alkalinity (> 1500 mg CaCO3 L-1) increased. Besides, all mixtures were efficient for metals precipitation (Fe2+ > 95%; Mn2+ > 96%; Zn2+ > 52%) and sulfate reduction (> 50%). However, a significant production of sulfide and a greater microbial activity was observed in the mixture of mushroom compost and coal mining waste 25:75, indicating the presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria. The results showed that mushroom compost could be used as organic carbon amendment to prevent AMD generation and that the mixture 25:75 could be a promising option to be used in Zipaquirá Mining District (Colombia).

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Occupational exposure to coal mining residues can generate a wide range of DNA lesions potentially associated with carcinogenic processes and other work related diseases. Objetive: To evaluate the genotoxic effects in the DNA of individuals occupationally exposed to coal mining residues considering micronucleus formation in lymphocytes (MN) as endpoints for genotoxicity and the possible modulating effect of DNA repair polymorphism hOGG1Ser326Cys (rs. 1052133). Methodology: The studied population was comprised by 74 exposed workers (GE) and 74 office non-exposed referents from general population as a control group (CG). The mean frequency of MN for GE was 8.8 ± 4.9, while for GC was 2.9 ± 4.0. In regard to time of exposure and MN frequency, individuals over 19 years of exposure presented a higher frequency of MN (13-20 MN) than individuals between 2 and 18 years of exposure (2-12 MN). Results: Frequency of MN discriminated by working areas, revealed that the individuals involved in mining activities had a higher MN frequency (11.3 ± 3.4), followed by those involved in embarking (9.0 ± 5.3) and coal carrying activities (8.3 ± 5.3). Modulatory activity of the hOGG1Ser326Cys polymorphism on MN frequency in GE individuals, showed a lower frequency (8.32 ± 4.70) in individuals carrying the polymorphism Ser / Cys, Cys / Cys compared to Ser / Ser (9.06 ± 4.95) carriers. These findings on the possible protective activity of hOGG1Ser326Cys in exposed populations provide new data to the increasing evidence about the protective role of this polymorphism. Conclusions: Data obtained showed that exposure to coal mining residues generates genotoxic effects that could be modulated by genetic variants of repair genes involved in removal of oxidative damage.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Investigations in Colombia about work and health conditions in coal mining are scarce and few have focused on the perception of the exposed population and their behaviors in response to inherent risks. Objective: To determine the association between work conditions and the perception of morbidity among coal miners in Guachetá, Cundinamarca. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was performed with 154 workers selected randomly from the total registered with the municipality. Information about social and demographic characteristics and work and health conditions in the mines was gathered. The prevalence was estimated for respiratory, musculoskeletal and auditory disorders. The associations between certain work conditions, and events with a prevalence over 30% were explored using bivariate and multivariate analyses with Poisson regressions with robust variance. Results: Workers were mostly men. Ages ranged from 18 to 77 years. Most frequently reported health problems were: back pain (46.1 %), pain in an upper limb (40.3%), pain in a lower limb (34.4 %), and respiratory (17.5 %) and auditory problems (13.6 %). Significant differences in perception were found depending on time on the job and underground or ground work conditions. Conclusions: The most recognized risks were those associated with musculoskeletal disorders since they were closer in time to the work performed (time discount). Some actions to identify psychological traits are proposed in order to improve risk perception among coal miners.

ABSTRACT

Context and Objective: Chagas disease is considered a worldwide emerging disease; it is endemic in Mexico and the state of Coahuila and is considered of little relevance. The objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of T. cruzi infection in blood donors and Chagas cardiomyopathy in patients from the coal mining region of Coahuila, Mexico. Design and Setting: Epidemiological, exploratory and prospective study in a general hospital during the period January to June 2011. Methods: We performed laboratory tests ELISA and indirect hemagglutination in three groups of individuals: 1) asymptomatic voluntary blood donors, 2) patients hospitalized in the cardiology department and 3) patients with dilated cardiomyopathy. Results: There were three levels of seroprevalence: 0.31% in asymptomatic individuals, 1.25% in cardiac patients and in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy in 21.14%. Conclusions: In spite of having detected autochthonous cases of Chagas disease, its importance to local public health remains to be established as well as the details of the dynamics of transmission so that the study is still in progress.

ABSTRACT

Objectives Establishing the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and disease in children aged less than 12 years-old living within the Cesar department's coal-mining area and possible associated factors. Methods This was a cross-sectional study of 1,627 children aged less than 10 years-old living in and near coal-mining areas in the Cesar department who were exposed to different levels of PM10 from 2008-2010; their PM10 exposure-related symptoms and respiratory diseases were measured, seeking an association with living in areas exposed to particulate material. Results Children living in areas close to coal-mining activity which also had high traffic volume had a higher rate of probable cases of asthma; those living in areas with traffic (not no coal-mining) were absent from school for more days due to acute respiratory disease. Respiratory symptoms were most commonly found in children experiencing living conditions which exposed them to cigarette or firewood smoke indoors, living in houses made with wattle and daub or adobe walls, living where animals were kept, living in damp housing and diesel-powered dump trucks operating within 100 m or less of their housing. Living in areas having high traffic volume increased the risk of respiratory symptoms, acute respiratory disease and being absent from school. Discussion All the effects studied were associated with intramural conditions, individual factors or those associated with the immediate surroundings thereby coinciding with results found in similar studies regarding air pollution and health. It is thus suggested that regional strategies and policy be created for controlling and monitoring the air quality and health of people living in the Cesar department.

ABSTRACT

The present article deals with soil analysis around five opencast coal projects of Ib river coalfield during pre-monsoon (March), monsoon (July) and post monsoon (November) periods of successive three years (i.e., 2006, 2007 and 2008). Sampling of soil has been done from the vertical surface of the overburden at successive depths of 0-5 ft, 5-10 ft and at 10-15 ft. The different physical (soil texture, soil moisture, particle density, bulk density and porosity) and chemical (pH, organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) parameters have been analysed. The soil textures of the study area are found to be loamy sand to loam, loam to silty loam and clay loam to silty clay loam in the depth of 0-5 ft, 5-10 ft and at 10-15 ft, respectively. The moisture content (7.297 at 0-5ft, 5.25 at 5-10 ft and 4.134% at 10-15 ft) and porosity (43.994 at 0-5ft, 40.682 at 5-10 ft and 35.85% at 10-15 ft) of the soil in the study area decreased gradually from the surface to greater depth. However, the particle density (2.639 at 0-5ft, 3.11 at 5-10 ft and 3.523 g cc-1 at 10-15 ft) and the bulk density (1.478 at 0-5ft, 1.839 at 5-10 ft and 2.269 g cc-1 at 10-15 ft) in this region increased from surface to the deeper region of the soil. The organic carbon (1.367 at 0-5ft, 0.9 at 5-10 ft and 0.396 kg ha-1 at 10-15 ft), nitrogen (2.845 at 0-5ft, 1.059 at 5-10 ft and 0.48 kg ha-1 at 10-15 ft) and phosphorus level (1.11 at 0-5ft, 0.715 at 5-10 ft and 0.679 kg ha-1 at 10-15 ft) of the soil decreased with increasing depth of the soil. However, the content of potassium (2.636 at 0-5ft, 4.374 at 5-10 ft and 5.82 kg ha-1 at 10-15 ft) increased gradually from the surface to the greater depth. Analysis of variance is computed to infer the variation in the concentration of parameters in different opencast coal projects and in various depths of the study area.

ABSTRACT

Heavy earth moving machineries, different capacities of dumpers and loaders, blasting and drilling make the mining environment noisy. A study was carried out to assess the noise level in different opencast projects in and around Belpahar and Brajarajnagar areas of Ib river coalfield. Noise assessment was carried out in various residential, commercial and industrial places. The noise levels, especially Leq values of different wheel loaders, dumpers, shovel and crusher units were also assessed and were more than permissible limit (90dB) in some of their operating conditions. Sound ressure level measurements while drilling into coal and overburden at Lakhanpur opencast project yielded noise levels (Leq) of 81.33 to 96.2 dB. Thus, these Leq values of drilling machines in most of the operating conditions were above permissible limit. The average noise intensities (6 a.m.-10 p.m.: 51.6-60.875dB and 10 p.m.-6 a.m.: 42.6-49.8dB) and Leq values (6 a.m.-10 p.m.: 50.9-67.0dB and 10 p.m.-6 a.m.: 40.8-53.3dB) during both day and night time of the residential areas around the Ib river coalfield were in close proximity or beyond the permissible limit. The Leq values at some of the commercial and industrial places were beyond (6 a.m.-10 p.m.: 61.6-88.3 dB and 10 p.m.-6 a.m.: 55.4- 64.8dB) permissible limit. However, in most of the cases, the Lmax noise values were more (6 a.m.-10 p.m.: 68.5-91.4 dB and 10 p.m.-6 a.m.: 69.3-76.4dB) than the permissible limit. Analysis of variance was also computed for heavy earth moving machineries in different operating conditions and also for different residential, commercial and industrial places to infer the level of significance. The difference of noise intensity produced by different wheel loaders at Lakhanpur and Lilari opencast projects, drilling machines at Lakhanpur opencast project, 50 tons capacity dumpers at various conditions of Ib river coalfield within the same operating condition was significant at both 5% and 1% levels of significance. Similarly, the variance of estimated noise level in residential places during day time and commercial and industrial places during day and night time was significant at both 5% and 1% levels of significance. Moreover, a preliminary survey adopting questionnaire method amongst the mine workers and local inhabitants was also carried out to evaluate their perception about the mining related noise.

ABSTRACT

The miners as well as the inhabitants vicinity to the mining areas are generally susceptible to the respiratory disorders due to constant exposure to the coalmine dust for a prolonged period. In this paper, the dust concentration and dust dose associated with the rate of tuberculosis around the major part of Ib Valley Coalfield (Belpahar and Brajarajnagar area) have been analysed. Several field trips around Ib Valley Coalfield have been conducted for consecutively three years (2005, 2006 and 2007) to evaluate the present status of the dust concentration and rate of tuberculosis infection. It was observed that the dust concentrations of different residential places as well as the places vicinity to the opencast mining projects have been increased in the subsequent years of investigation. As a result, the dust doses of various residential places have also increased in a parallel manner. The dust doses of various mining sites range from 25.51 to 37.08 mg, 34.76 to 41.03 mg and 37.8 to 44.49 mg during 2005, 2006 and 2007 respectively. Interestingly, in most of the mining sites the dust doses are more than the safe dust does (32 mg). An attempt has been made to correlate the dust concentration with tuberculosis infection in the area by making a questionnaire survey. Early symptoms of tuberculosis were reported in case of 121 out of 205, 129 out of 212 and 145 out of 220 inhabitants during 2005, 2006 and 2007 respectively. The study clearly revealed that the tuberculosis patients have been increased significantly in the successive years of investigation.

ABSTRACT

The coal mining activity is characterized by the generation of large amount of by-products. One of them is pyrite, which tends to acidify the water, solubilizing heavy metals. As a consequence the environment becomes acid and rich in heavy metals, selecting microorganisms able to survive in this condition, which are of great interest as bioremediation agents. This work describes the isolation and characterization of microorganisms from a coal mining area in Santa Catarina. These microorganisms comprised bacteria, fungi and yeasts resistant to zinc, nickel and cadmium.
